Beneath the Surface
There is a different kind of silence beneath the water. Beneath the Surface captures that moment of leaving the noise of the world behind and becoming completely immersed in another one.
The diver is photographed at close range, surrounded by rising bubbles and shafts of sunlight breaking through the moving water above. The distant ocean floor gradually disappears into soft focus, keeping the human connection at the centre of the photograph while still giving a sense of the vast world surrounding her.
Presented in monochrome, the photograph becomes less about the colour of the ocean and more about light, movement and depth. Every reflection across the mask, ripple at the surface and beam of light helps capture the extraordinary feeling of being somewhere that is both peaceful and completely unfamiliar.
For me, this piece represents exploration, freedom and the courage to venture beyond the surface and discover what lies beneath.
