The Body I Call Home Collection
The Body I Call Home was created as a celebration of the female body in all its forms and as a response to the impossible standards women are so often expected to measure themselves against.
For many women, looking in the mirror does not mean seeing what everybody else sees. Body dysmorphia, insecurity and years of comparison can distort the way we view ourselves. We notice the parts we have been taught to criticise and overlook the beauty of the person standing in front of us.
I created this series for anyone who has ever felt that their body was somehow not enough. Too big. Too small. Too curvy. Not curvy enough. The wrong shape, the wrong colour or simply different from the narrow version of beauty we are repeatedly shown.
The exaggerated and unconventional colours within these artworks are intentional. By moving away from realistic skin tones, the body is no longer defined by complexion, ethnicity or a conventional idea of what a woman is supposed to look like. Instead, colour follows the curves, shadows and shapes of the human form and asks the viewer to simply see a body as something beautiful.
No two bodies are the same and they were never supposed to be.
Our bodies carry us through love, loss, motherhood, illness, ageing, change and everything else life asks of us. They change with us and tell parts of our stories that photographs and memories sometimes cannot.
This collection is not about having the “perfect” body. It is about questioning why we were ever taught that such a thing existed.
Whatever your size, shape or colour, your body does not need to meet somebody else’s standard to deserve kindness, acceptance or love.
You were never less beautiful because you were different.
