Drifting Light Actylic Paint & Permanent Marker On Canvas
Drifting Light — Acrylic Paint & Permanent Marker on Canvas
Drifting Light is a large jellyfish artwork created using acrylic paint and permanent markers on a deep 38mm gallery canvas.
The jellyfish emerges from a dark underwater setting, with layers of deep blue and green contrasted by flashes of yellow, gold, copper and warmer tones. The brighter colours running through the centre give the impression of light filtering through the water and illuminating the jellyfish as it drifts through the darkness.
I built the piece up in layers, combining acrylic paint with permanent marker to create different textures and details throughout the body and tentacles. Some areas are deliberately softer and more fluid while others have stronger lines and marks, giving the artwork an expressive, slightly abstract quality.
The long trailing tentacles and vertical streaks of colour create a sense of movement, while the darker outer areas draw attention towards the light and colour at the centre of the painting.
At 76 × 51cm, Drifting Light is a substantial statement piece, and the 38mm gallery canvas gives the artwork additional depth when displayed on a wall.
